Description:: Cathepsin E ( and MEROPS identifier A01.010) is a secreted aspartic endopeptidase. It is synthesized as an inactive precursor and when activated forms a disulfide-linked homodimer. Quantitative N-terminal proteomics has been used to study substrate specificity. Cathepsin E is present in antigen-presenting cells of the immune system, osteoclasts and gastric cells, and it may be associated with the plasma membrane. Knockout of the CATE gene is not lethal, but mice develop atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions when kept under normal conditions. Knockout mice have increased susceptibility to bacterial infections, which is associated with decreased cell surface expression of Toll-like receptors 2 and 4 on macrophages.
