The appropriate handling and disposal of medical wastes from pathology laboratories were reviewed. Emphasis was placed on basic ideas regarding 1) the reduction of the total volume of the wastes and prevention of unnecessary waste production, and 2) laboratory practices friendly to the global environment. An ethical perspective is needed for the disposal of human organs and tissues. Evaporation-assisted reuse of organic solvents and formaldehyde, and filter adsorption of carcinogenic substances such as diaminobenzidine and ethidium bromide are also described.
