The Journal of organic chemistry 2008 Nov 7Ru3(CO)12 has been found to be the efficient catalyst for the addition reactions of catechols with both terminal and internal alkynes to selectively afford 2,2-disubstituted 1,3-benzodioxoles in good to high yields. The formation of 2,2-substituted 1,3-benzodioxoles results from the tandem addition of two O-H bonds of catechols to alkyne's triple bond.
