Acute diarrhea is defined as the abrupt onset of abnormally high fluid content in the stool. The differential diagnosis of diarrhea is broad and includes the extra-intestinal and systematic diseases. Regardless of the causative agent, initial therapy should include rehydration. Careful interview and physical examination are helpful in determining the pathogens and choosing the most appropriate therapy. Most cases of acute diarrhea are self-limited, routine empirical treatment is not warranted.
