Decreased urine output and acute kidney injury (also known as acute renal failure) are among the most important complications that may develop in the postanesthetic period. In this article, the authors present definitions of decreased urine output, oliguria, and acute kidney injury. They review the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and prevention of postoperative acute kidney injury. Finally, the article offers approaches to diagnosis and management of the postsurgical patient with decreased urine output or acute kidney injury. Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
