Immobilization or unloading results in rapid bone loss by both enhanced bone resorption and suppressed bone formation. Bisphosphonates have been used to treat immobilization osteoporosis to suppress increased bone resorption. Recently, parathyroid hormone and anti-sclerostin antibody have been shown to enhance bone formation in immobilized or unloaded animal models. It is possible that these anabolic agents will be good alternatives for immobilization osteoporosis.
