The folate receptors are involved in the transport and maintenance of intracellular levels of folate. Folate receptor alpha (FR-alpha, FOLR1) and beta (FR-beta, FOLR2) are glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins that facilitate unidirectional transport of folates into cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis. This entry represents folate receptor beta. FOLR2 is expressed on the proinflammatory subset of monocytes and can be targeted selectively with folate-linked drugs.
