L-selectin is an adhesion receptor in leukocytic cells that mediates the capture of leukocytes from the blood stream and the subsequent rolling along the vascular endothelium. This event is the first step in the adhesion cascade, which enables leukocytes to migrate out of the vasculature into surrounding tissues during inflammation. L-selectin also regulates the recirculation of lymphocytes between blood and lymph nodes via high endothelial venules.L-Selectin is a type I transmembrane protein comprising an N-terminal lectin domain, an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domain, two short consensus repeats, a membrane-spanning region and a short 17-amino acid cytoplasmic domain.
